In a significant stride toward improving community health awareness, the Couples and Kids Social Initiative (CKSI) recently completed a successful medical outreach program in the Iwaya Community, Lagos. Held in March 2025, this initiative focused on one of the most overlooked aspects of preventative healthcare: genetic testing and counseling.
Empowering Through Knowledge
For many families in underserved communities, access to specialized medical services like genetic screening remains out of reach. Recognizing this gap, CKSI mobilized a qualified medical team to bring these essential services directly to the doorstep of Iwaya residents.
The event saw an impressive turnout, with more than 80 individuals receiving comprehensive screening. The atmosphere was one of hope and engagement as community members took proactive steps to understand their health better.
A Holistic Approach to Care
The outreach was designed not just to test, but to care. The process involved three key stages:
Professional Counseling: Before and after testing, participants were guided by experts who explained the importance of genetic awareness, particularly regarding hereditary conditions that can impact future generations.
Testing: Using reliable screening methods, the medical team efficiently tested dozens of residents, identifying those with specific genetic markers.
Referral and Support: Crucially, the initiative did not end at diagnosis. Individuals identified as carriers or those requiring further medical attention were given official referrals to the General Hospital for confirmatory tests and specialized care. This ensures a continuum of care that extends far beyond the day of the outreach.
Why This Matters
Genetic counseling is a vital tool for family planning and long-term health management. For carriers of genetic traits, early knowledge is power, it allows for informed decisions that can prevent the transmission of serious hereditary conditions to children. By bringing this sophisticated level of care to Iwaya, CKSI is helping to build a healthier, more informed generation.
This outreach stands as a testament to CKSI’s unwavering commitment to the well-being of families and children across Nigeria. As we continue to expand our reach, we remain grateful to our volunteers, medical partners, and the welcoming people of Iwaya for making this impactful day possible.
Together, we are building healthier families, one community at a time.
